Mahler No. 3. Snare drum in the distance.

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the “Príncipe Felipe” auditorium in Oviedo, the Oviedo Filarmonía and the Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias join forces to play one of the most monumental works in the repertoire: Mahler´s Symphony No. 3.

This time, I am in charge of the snare drum “in the distance” (“in der ferne”).

kleine trommel in der ferne

It happens too often (specially in opera, but also in French editions) that the editors, to save paper, ink and, mainly, the work of a layout designer, that the part indicates “Tacet fino al…” and a rehearsal number. Just a few bars before our entrance, a cue is included. They do not write down the whole part.

I really dislike that practice and I firmly belive that it is a disrespect for the musicians. I like being in control of the whole process, so I profoundly dislike this practice, which I think is a bungle.

It is for that reason that, the first thing I did when I started working on this part, was writing my own edition of the part so I can work safely and secure. This evening, at 20:00, we will be playing this wonderful symphony, but I have thought that my edition could be useful to other colleagues. It is for that reason that you can download it through the following link:

I will retake this part in the near future and will discuss it, as it is more complex than what it may seem at first sight.

You are free to use this part, Please tag me, as I enjoy knowing where in the world my editions are being played.

…et in Arcadia ego.
